So what are a release unit and a release package? And what's the difference? A release unit is a part of the service or infrastructure that is included in the release, in accordance with the organization's release guidelines. So for example, an organization may decide that the release unit for business critical applications is the complete application in order to ensure that testing is comprehensive. The same organization may decide that a more appropriate release unit for a website is at the page level. Whereas, a release package is a single release unit or a structured collection of release units. All the elements of which the service consists - the infrastructure, hardware, software, applications, documentation, knowledge, et cetera - must be taken into account.
